What bed bugs look like
Adults are 4–5 mm, flat, reddish-brown, apple-seed shaped. Nymphs are smaller and pale. Eggs are white, 1 mm, glued into cracks. Shed skins look like empty bug shells.
The 5 signs, in order
Check mattress seams, box spring, bed frame joints and headboard with a flashlight: live bugs, dark fecal spots that smear, rusty blood smears on sheets, shed skins, eggs in crevices.
Bites are not proof
Bite rows on arms or neck suggest bed bugs but fleas, mites and mosquitoes look identical. Confirm with physical signs or an interceptor trap under bed legs.
Rule out look-alikes
Carpet beetle larvae cause rashes from hairs, not bites. Fleas jump and bite ankles. Bird mites appear after removing a nest. When in doubt, catch the bug in tape and compare photos.

Do bed bugs spread disease?
No proven disease transmission, but bites itch, disturb sleep and can get infected from scratching.
Can I see bed bug eggs?
Yes with a flashlight: 1 mm white grains glued in seams and screw holes. They hatch in 6–10 days.
